Latin Name: Perilla frutescens ‘Tricolor’

The Perilla ‘Tricolor’ is a striking, ornamental annual prized for its vibrant, variegated foliage and culinary uses. Growing 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) tall, it’s ideal for containers, borders, and herb gardens.

This Japanese cultivar features broad, serrated leaves with irregular patches of purple, pink, and green, creating a kaleidoscope effect. Though it produces small white flowers, it’s primarily grown for its edible leaves, which have a spicy, basil-like flavor used in Asian cuisine.

Thrives in partial shade (colors fade in full sun) and moist, well-draining soil. Heat-tolerant but frost-sensitive. Self-seeds readily in warm climates.

Perfect for contrast plantings, pair with coleus, ferns, or silver artemisia.

Key Features:

  • Foliage: Variegated, aromatic when crushed

  • Uses: Culinary (sushi garnish), ornamental
