Overview & Description
Jack Pine (Pinus banksiana) is a native North American evergreen tree prized for its uniquely open, irregular shape that makes it an ideal specimen for naturalistic landscapes. Its bright green foliage consists of short, twisted needles in bundles of two. This hardy, adaptable pine offers distinctive character and texture, standing out among more formally shaped evergreens.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits an open, irregular, often scraggly growth habit that develops character with age. It is a moderate-growing tree, typically reaching a mature size of about 33 – 50 feet in height with a spread of 10 – 12 feet.
Additional Notes
It produces small, curved, serotinous cones that often remain closed until opened by fire. Hardy to Zone 2, it is excellent for dry, sandy sites and is drought tolerant once established in acidic, moist, well-drained soil. Keep compact by pinching new growth “candles” in half. An outstanding choice for specimen plantings, naturalized areas, dry sandy sites, and native landscapes where open irregular form and bright green foliage are desired.
