Latin Name: Ipomoea batatas

The Sweet Potato Vine is a vigorous, trailing perennial (often grown as an annual) prized for its vibrant foliage and rapid growth. With varieties reaching 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) tall and spreading 3–6 feet (0.9–1.8 meters), it’s ideal for containers, hanging baskets, and ground cover.

This ornamental plant (cultivated for foliage, not edible tubers) features heart-shaped or deeply lobed leaves in bold shades of purple, chartreuse, bronze, or variegated pink/green. Though it occasionally produces small morning glory-like flowers, its colorful leaves are the main attraction.

Thrives in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-draining soil. Heat-loving but frost-sensitive (hardy in zones 9–11). Deer-resistant and low-maintenance.

Perfect for spiller combos, pair with coleus, calibrachoa, or dusty miller.
