Overview & Description

The Emerald Cedar (Thuja occidentalis ‘Smaragd’) transforms landscapes with its sleek columnar form and vibrant emerald-green foliage that maintains bright colour year-round. This versatile conifer features glossy green scales that stay vibrant even in winter, creating a thick, opaque barrier with naturally dense, uniform growth. Its refined appearance adds instant sophistication as a hedge, screen, or architectural accent without requiring pruning to maintain shape.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a narrow columnar, dense, and uniform growth habit with moderate annual growth of 6-12 inches. It forms a sleek, manageable tree, typically reaching a mature size of about 8 to 12 feet in height with a spread of 3 to 4 feet.

Additional Notes

Evergreen with vibrant emerald-green foliage year-round. Hardy and adaptable, it thrives in sun to part shade and urban conditions. Deer-resistant and low-maintenance. An outstanding choice for privacy screens that won’t overpower small yards, framing entryways or driveways, creating formal hedges without the fuss, or adding vertical structure to mixed borders where year-round colour and refined form are desired.

  • Protect from dry winds by planting in a protected part of yard

Bonus:

  • Wrap them in burlap or other light cloth over winter to help protect them from the winter sun and weather changes
