Overview & Description
The Dwarf Golden Barberry (Berberis thunbergii ‘Aurea Nana’) is a compact, slow-growing deciduous shrub prized for its luminous golden-yellow foliage that brings bright, eye-catching color to any landscape. Its small, chartreuse to gold leaves hold their color throughout the summer, deepening to rich amber and then to vibrant shades of orange and red in fall, offering multi-season interest. In spring, inconspicuous pale yellow flowers appear, followed by glossy, bright red berries that persist into winter, adding ornamental value and attracting birds. The stems feature sharp thorns, making this shrub an excellent choice as a barrier or hedge plant.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, rounded, compact growth habit with fine-textured branching. It is a slow-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 18 – 36 inches in height with a similar spread of 18 – 36 inches.
Additional Notes
It blooms in late spring with small yellow flowers. Hardy to Zone 3, it is drought-tolerant once established, adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils, and tolerates urban pollution. Best golden foliage color is achieved in full sun; in partial shade, leaves may turn lime green. Deer-resistant due to its thorny stems. An outstanding choice for borders, low hedges, foundation plantings, rock gardens, and mass plantings.
