Overview & Description
The Dwarf Garland Spirea (Spiraea x arguta ‘Compacta’) is a delightful, compact shrub known for its graceful, arching branches and fine-textured, soft green leaves. In early spring, it becomes a showstopper as tiny, pure white flowers blanket the branches, creating a stunning foam-like, cascading effect of delicate blooms. The small, lance-shaped leaves turn an attractive coppery-bronze to yellow in the fall.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, multi-stemmed, rounded to mounded form with a relatively fine texture. It is a fast-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 3 to 4 feet in height with a spread of 3 to 4 feet. It can be expected to live for approximately 20 years under ideal conditions.
Additional Notes
It blooms in early to mid-spring. It blooms on old wood, so any pruning should be done immediately after flowering to avoid removing next year’s buds. Hardy to Zone 3, it is low-maintenance and thrives in full sun to partial sun in average, moist, well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established, attracts butterflies, and is resistant to deer. An excellent choice for borders, foundation plantings, low hedges, rock gardens, or mass plantings.
