Overview & Description
Burly Blue Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum ‘Burly Blue’) is a rugged, cold-hardy evergreen conifer prized for its intense, silvery-blue foliage and dense, pyramidal to columnar form. Its scale-like needles maintain their striking blue colour throughout the year, providing consistent ornamental appeal in all seasons. This compact, slow-growing selection of Rocky Mountain Juniper is exceptionally drought-tolerant and wind-resistant, making it an excellent choice for exposed landscapes and challenging sites. Its dense branching habit offers excellent screening and wildlife shelter.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, upright, pyramidal to columnar growth habit. It is a slow-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 10 – 15 feet in height with a spread of 4 – 6 feet.
Additional Notes
It does not have showy flowers. Hardy to Zone 3, it is drought tolerant once established, adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils, including poor, rocky, and alkaline soils, and tolerates wind, salt, and urban pollution. It thrives in full sun for best foliage colour. Deer resistant and low-maintenance. An outstanding choice for privacy screens, windbreaks, foundation plantings, accent specimens, xeriscapes, and narrow spaces where intense silvery-blue foliage, cold hardiness, and compact upright form are desired.
