Overview & Description

The Belle de Nancy Lilac (Syringa vulgaris ‘Belle de Nancy’) is a classic French cultivar introduced in 1891 by the renowned nursery of Victor Lemoine & Fils in Nancy, France. It is prized for its exceptionally fragrant, fully double flowers. The blooms emerge from deep reddish-purple buds and open to soft, clear mauve-pink petals that may fade to a paler hue, creating a romantic, multi-tonal effect. The heart-shaped, dark green foliage provides a lush backdrop throughout the growing season.

Growth & Size

This multi-stemmed deciduous shrub exhibits a vigorous, upright to vase-shaped growth habit. It slowly reaches a mature size of about 8 to 12 feet in height with a spread of 6 to 10 feet, though it can occasionally grow larger over many decades. It grows at a medium rate and can live for approximately 30 years under ideal conditions.

Additional Notes

It blooms in late spring, producing dense, showy flower clusters. The flowers are excellent for cutting and attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. It thrives in full sun and well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil, and is hardy to Zone 3. An outstanding choice for cottage gardens, borders, hedges, or as a fragrant specimen where nostalgic charm, romantic colour, and sweet perfume are desired.
