Overview & Description
The Alpine Currant (Ribes alpinum) is a tough, adaptable deciduous shrub prized for its dense, mounding form and exceptional hardiness. It features small, lobed green leaves that turn mild yellow in autumn. Male specimens are typically grown as they produce no inconspicuous fruit, ensuring a tidy appearance. Its fine texture and dense branching create an excellent manicured look suitable for formal settings.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, mounding, and rounded growth habit. It forms a compact, well-branched shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 3 to 6 feet in both height and spread, depending on pruning.
Additional Notes
Deciduous with green summer foliage turning mild yellow in fall. Exceptionally hardy to Zone 2, it thrives in full sun to full shade and tolerates drought, pollution, poor soils, and heavy pruning. Its near-indestructible nature makes it outstanding for low formal hedges, sheared foundation plantings, mass plantings, or erosion control in urban and challenging sites where reliable greenery requires virtually no maintenance.
