Choosing Seeds

  • start with fresh, quality seeds
  • seeds should be stored in a dark, dry and cool spot
  • make sure to read the back of the seed packet, there is a lot of great information there, including:
    • type of plant and description
    • use of plant and where it grows best
    • sowing and growing instructions
    • germination rates and plant out dates
  • when starting out choose easier seeds before moving on to more difficult ones
  • easy: tomatoes, marigolds, beans, snapdragons, sunflowers, basil, lettuce
  • more difficult (require scarification, stratification or soaking): petunias, parsley, delphinium
